Parents Comments

Congratulations! If you are considering a different experience for your teen next summer, let Magellan Study Abroad introduce him/her to a whole new way to learn while having fun, and prepare to embark on a wonderful adventure yourself! Treat yourself to a few of the many comments we receive from parents upon their teen’s return from a Magellan program -a life changing experience!

“It is exciting to watch your child grow and become a responsible young adult. To see her build self-confidence and believe in herself is priceless. After multiple trips, my daughter continues to mature; however I noticed a difference in her immediately after her very first trip with Magellan. She was more sure of herself than she had ever been before. She walked taller, holding her head high and felt that she could do or handle anything thrown her way. She wasn't afraid to try something new. She made new friends near and far with connections like no other friendship she had ever had. Her language skills improved tremendously after each trip and she was excited to try out what she learned back at her own school. We enjoy family time listening to the stories about her adventures and daily activities abroad. Your carefully thought out excursions gave my daughter a chance to really learn about the culture, history and environment she was in. She took advantage of every opportunity to immerse herself in the everyday lifestyle and people of the countries she visited. I have enjoyed her personal journey as much as her cultural one. Thank you, Magellan, for offering your wonderful life changing experiences that no child should ever miss.”

“Our daughter, Samantha, had a wonderful time in Spain. Truly, it was the trip of a lifetime for her...she loved her group and came home with so many memories and experiences. Thank you so much!!”

Jennifer W.

“Amanda experienced so much on her trips with Magellan. She explored multiple locations and landmarks in Spain, enhanced her ability to use the Spanish language, lived independently in another culture, and connected to her Spanish families and her American traveling companions.

As parents, we appreciated the ongoing communication between our family and Magellan staff. The face-to-face meetings, the printed materials, the answers to impromptu phone calls provided us with the information we needed to work with our daughter to make the decisions that needed to be made before the trip began. The periodic emails from the Travel Director gave us insights into their experiences in Spain and kept us abreast of their travels. The emailed pictures offered us the opportunity to see some of their experiences and students’ positive reactions to them. As parents, we also appreciated the attention to safety that the Magellan staff and chaperones had for each student. Expectations for behavior were clearly outlined prior to the trip. Medical insurance was even provided as part of the travel package. Knowing that supervision was provided throughout the trip also helped to ease any worries.

Our goal was to give our daughter the opportunity to independently experience another culture and expand her command of the Spanish language. The Magellan programs exceeded our expectations!”

“Thank you so much for providing Marisa with the experience of a lifetime -she has not stopped talking about it since she arrived home (exhausted and with her luggage at a different airport but happy)! She had a wonderful time and I wish every student had the chance to experience your program. Jim and I especially appreciated your correspondence and pictures so we could live vicariously through e-mail. You are great at what you do and we would recommend this program to anyone!”

“My daughter had a wonderful experience. She enjoyed the trip so much she is trying to convince us that next year may require study abroad as well.”

Evan G.

“I just wanted to thank you for your wonderful program. As it was Madison's first trip abroad without us, I was naturally a concerned parent. I am happy to say that she had a great time, loved her host family, made new friends and her language skills definitely improved. I know she will always have special memories of her trip to Spain. I also wanted to thank you for e-mailing photos of the group during various stops on the itinerary. It was fun to see everyone having a good time. All in all, it was a fantastic experience for Madison and I know she is eager to travel again.”

“I wanted to express my sincere thanks for exposing Hayley to such and amazing new country. She has grown so much during the last three weeks and I appreciate the kindness you have shown to her. We have taken Hayley all over North America over the years, but this cannot compare to her European vacation. She made lifelong friends and the sites are incomparable. What made the trip perfect was the chaperones. Your enthusiasm and planning was ten times more than we expected. Hayley has raved about how well structured everyday has been and coming from the "queen of perfection and structure", that is quite a compliment. All of you at the office or on location were instrumental in the success and I am sure you have had a few challenges dealing with a bunch of teenagers along the way. Thank you again for giving her a memory that will last a lifetime.”

Renéé B.

“How come I never thought of you before? Mike cannot stop talking about his trip! It is overwhelming to see how much my son has grown in just a month! He is more independent and more confident and really gets the conversation going in the house with all his anecdotes from the trip. Sadly for me, I think he prefers his homestay’s mum food to mine! Thank you to all the Magellan staff for all you careful planning and efforts. My husband and I now know what our daughter will be doing next summer!”

Brenda P.

“I want to thank you for all the opportunities you've given to Ozzie. It opened up new worlds to him. Given his level of imagination and curiosity, what he learned traveling with you will serve him well in the future I also want to thank you for all your patience in dealing with all those teenagers. Heaven knows they're difficult enough one-on-one! He is happy to be home but is already planning to go back to Europe asap! Which, for him, means get a job and start saving!”

Heather T.

Again, we can't thank you enough for the amazing (transformative) time Jenna had. She already was back in California and met up with Kelly and Casey last month while we were looking at colleges. She is excited about 4th year spanish now and seems to think her study abroad has made a huge difference already! Thanks again.

Benefits For Students

HOW STUDY ABROAD BENEFITS YOUR STUDENT

Following a Magellan program, your student will not only reap the benefits of international exposure but will now have an edge when applying for college in an increasingly competitive race toward the nation’s top schools. A Magellan experience could possibly fuel an exciting application essay; whether it’s a lively discussion of the differences between sevillana and flamenco traditional dances or the rewards of connecting with local children while doing a community service project in Costa Rica, they are sure to have something interesting to say.

Additionally, the international experience and foreign language skills could provide yet another edge, as a greater number of employers today are requiring these skills to attain a more favorable position in the global marketplace. Today’s Magellan experience could open doors to many more career opportunities later.

We realize that it is a difficult adjustment for parents when their students travel abroad without family. To put your mind at rest, we have prepared some answers to possible questions you may have. Please click on the bar above for Answers for Parents.

  Safety Issues

Magellan’s first concern is the safety and well-being of all of our participants. Our many years of experience living, working, and traveling in the destinations we have chosen have provided us with excellent knowledge of the people, culture and surroundings. We select only the safest cities to run our programs, which is why you won’t see us in many locations offered by other companies. We operate only in cities where our students can explore freely, and care is taken to work with only the best in service providers at the locations we have chosen. Nonetheless, there are always risks when traveling overseas and living in a foreign country. As with any travel program, we have rules by which we expect our students to abide, for example, inappropriate behavior or use of alcohol and drugs is prohibited. Following these rules will provide the best protection from dangers. Our onsite staff is available to participants 24 hours a day to assist with any problem or issue. However, the staff cannot supervise everyone at every moment; it is the responsibility and obligation of each participant to follow our Program Rules and use good judgment while traveling and studying abroad. We have never had a problem with safety on any of our programs, and we are confident about maintaining that record.

  Supervision

The adult to student ratio is always excellent, at approximately 1:8. Our onsite chaperons live minutes away from our students in the home stay portion of the program and are accessible 24 hours a day by cell phone. Magellan organizes many supervised group excursions and activities, and although our days are busy, each day is not filled with pre-planned activities, allowing students to spend time with their families or friends. Magellan understands the need for teens to have their own space, away from adult supervision at times, and builds free time into our itineraries. Because safety is our top priority, we expect our students to maintain the same high standards of personal behavior while at school, with our host families, during supervised group activities or when out on their own spending free time with friends.

  Host Families

Magellan Study Abroad has very strict standards and requirements for our host families.
Our home stay families as well as their homes are screened and selected with the utmost care by our onsite staff. They are chosen based on their motivation and willingness to help our students learn a new culture as well as proximity of home to school. Because we select families that provide stable, caring, and healthy environments, most students remember their home stay experience as one of the most rewarding aspects of their time abroad. Additionally, because we have placed students with many of the same families before without any problems, we are assured that our students will be satisfied. As mentioned above, our chaperons live only minutes away, accessible by cell phone 24 hours a day, and available to help to ensure everyone’s comfort. To read a profile of one of our host families,

  Home Sick

It is not uncommon for some students to feel home sick while away for several weeks in a foreign country. We encourage parents to listen sensitively to their student’s concerns and refer him or her to the Program Director or chaperons. Our staff is trained to help students feel more comfortable and make adjustments to their new environment so they can take advantage of the full Magellan experience. We find that most students adapt very quickly, and with the busy itineraries we plan for each of our programs, our students are drawn right into the activities almost immediately.

  Visits from Parents

Some parents have asked about visiting their students during the program. We discourage such contact because part of the learning and growing experience is to be away from parental contact and live semi-independently in a new environment. Magellan helps to develop this kind of independence as preparation for college days and to give students a sense of self-confidence and self-esteem. (In fact, the residence stays on some of our programs will give our students a taste of dorm life before they actually experience it during their college years.) Furthermore, cultural immersion – having to learn to communicate in a foreign language and assimilate accordingly –
is interrupted by parent visits during the program. The acculturation process is part of the Magellan learning process.

  Parental Support

Magellan parents provide critical support for their students in our programs. Some parents are able to provide a portion or all of the financial obligations. Those who are unable to help out financially, or only partially, can be a vital force in encouraging their students to perform fundraising activities. Some Magellan students are able to earn or raise all of the costs, especially when their parents are supporting their efforts!

  Important Documents

For most of our students, international travel is a new experience. Please guide your students to secure proper documents: a valid passport, airline tickets, credit and ATM cards, medical forms, and other documentation required for the program. Keeping copies of these items would make replacing the originals easier if one becomes lost.

  Encouragement

Parents provide important emotional support for Magellan students. Take time to help them learn about the country they will be visiting. Look over maps with them. Help them prepare for the time that they will spend away from family. When they return, listen to their stories and share their enthusiasm. Magellan experiences provide an excellent avenue for you to spend quality time with your teen when he/she returns with memorable stories and photos.
