SEVILLA

PROGRAM

Begin and end your adventures with sightseeing and activities in the grand metropolis of Madrid, your gateway city, and the capital of Spain. Tour the Royal Palace and the ever popular Prado and Reina Sofia museums before departing for your new home in Sevilla, one of the most charming cities in Spain, exhibiting a delightful blend of the past and present. A city of lovely parks, plazas, and outdoor cafes: there are plenty of opportunities to practice your Spanish language skills. Historic buildings and elaborate architecture give witness to the vast culture, history and art that have been a part of Sevilla for centuries. The city is also known for its joyous, free-spirited people who give this ancient city a contemporary vibrancy.

Three weeks of Spanish language immersion will have to suffice as the next destination calls: Portugal! The final week of your European adventure begins with accommodation in a student residence in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. As in Sevilla, interesting cultural activities abound, including workshops for ceramics and dance, churches and museums; additionally, students will enjoy the pristine beach just south of the city. Your stay in Portugal will be remembered fondly, as the Portuguese people have the reputation for being extremely hospitable and courteous. Transfer by night train from Lisbon to Madrid, where you will once again have the opportunity to engage your excellent Spanish language skills to navigate the historical streets and wonderful shops of this vibrant city before returning home.

DESTINATIONS

Sevilla (pop. 650,000) earned an international reputation at the 1992 World Expo and continues to be a favorite destination for world travelers. The city boasts a dazzling array of churches, towers, palaces and other historic buildings. The Cathedral, located in the Plaza del Triunfo, was started in the 15th Century and took hundreds of years to complete, rivaling the size of St. Peter’s in Rome. Among the famous buried in the Cathedral is Christopher Columbus. Close by is a 14th Century Mudéjar palace, the Reales Alcazares, another impressive site.

Lisbon (pop. 600,000) is an ancient city stretching back to the early Greek and Roman empires. Enjoying a moderate climate, it is built along the Atlantic Ocean that keeps it from getting either too hot or too cold. The capital of Portugal since its conquest from the Moors in 1147, Lisbon has been the site of an incredible diversity of peoples and architecture and, at times, the seat of a great sea-going empire.
